| A small country grocery store was suffering major shrinkage problems. The owner had two shops, one was earning money and one was not. This particular store was down to an 8% margin; he commented to us that he trusted every member of his staff.
To help solve his problem we installed a number of hidden cameras and till monitoring equipment and set the system to record. After 14 days we removed the recordings, and during monitoring we identified a female member of staff who was giving stock away, there was one old lady who received three packets of cigarettes daily with no charge.
We interviewed the staff member who admitted theft over a 10-year period in excess of £150k; she later repaid £20k. She said her reason for starting this was that the old lady used to work in bakery across the road and on daily basis would have brought in fruit cake or apple tart and that she felt obliged to return the favour by giving her cigarettes, she did not realise she was almost putting the business to its knees.
