8 Staff Members Caught

Large Supervalu Store, Co Down In 2001 a local business man approached Successful Security informing us he was experiencing major losses in his business and was at whit’s end ready to close the door. He said that he had major losses in grocery stock and fuel, he was also experiencing till shortages but could not identify how or where these losses were occurring. We arranged a meeting to go and see his shop and forecourt, on arriving we found he had a CCTV system installed but the camera quality was poor and there were no cameras covering the point of sale. We then discussed with the owner upgrading his equipment and that Successful Security would put in sufficient CCTV and monitoring equipment to monitor his tills and the point of sale. The owner agreed to our recommendations and the, installation of equipment was completed during the silent hours. After 14 days the first hard drive was removed from the system and monitoring started. Within days it was evident to our monitoring staff member that there was a major theft major problem in this business. At the conclusion of this investigation 8 members of staff were interviewed with a total admission of £14,000 most of which was recovered from the guilty staff members. Very soon after this investigation this local businessman noticed a dramatic increase in margin all throughout his business, and the problem of till shortages have all but ceased. This local businessman is still in a monitoring contract with Successful Security. We have continued to monitor his premises for theft by staff; we conducted three more interviews in 2003 with admissions of theft amounting to £3500, which was recovered. In 2008 we again had cause to investigate theft in this store, this resulted in two members of staff found to be under ringing petrol purchases into the till and after receiving the payment from the customer dropped the notes into a waste bin under counter, they were observed later when going for a smoke break conveniently taking the waste bin to empty with them, whilst outside these staff would remove the notes from the bin. At interview they admitted to stealing £4500, which again was recovered by the owner of the business.
