£1/4 Million Theft Uncovered
Autumn 2002

In May 2002 Successful Security highlighted one of its largest Staff Frauds to date. A Co Down Business man after purchasing his first bar called in Successful Security to investigate a suspicion that he had relating to low margins in his bar and Off Licence.

Initially Successful Security discussed the running of the business and concluded that a covert CCTV system should be installed in two out of three areas within the business. Shortly after installation the first recording highlighted two members of staff under-ringing tills in both the bar and off licence.

The lady in the Off Licence was a major threat to the business as she was caught stealing an average of £130 per shift. A brief consultation followed with the owner at which it was requested that Successful Security would interview this lady immediately This member of staff had worked for the previous owner for over 16 years on a part time basis working only 4 shifts per week and only in the mornings.

An interview was set up during which the lady admitted serious theft over the last 10 years.

Underestimating the Theft we concluded @£250,000. Because the present owner was only in the business for 7 months a £10,000 figure was offered by the lady and paid in full.

The barman also admitted £2800 in the same period. It also was paid in full. A short time later the previous owner of the bar called to question the rumours that were circulating in the area.

The new owner confirmed the facts of the investigations to the previous owner who subsequently broke down. He spoke of his suspicions over the previous years but stated that this person was the last one that he would have suspected.

In fact he stated that he believed that his brother who was partner in the business after their father had died was the one he suspected. Drawing to a conclusion he said that this was the only reason that the bar was sold because he could not live with this doubt that had festered in his mind over the last number of years.

A burden that he will now have to live with for the rest of his life.
