Filling Station (24 hour) Shop - £24,000
A night shift worker was under ringing goods to the value of £100 per shift. During the interview, he admitted to fraudulent till procedures totalling £24,000 over a 12 month period. Arrangements are being made for recovery of the money.

Supermarket - £24,500
All the staff were found to be sweethearting each other (not charging for goods purchased). Two members of staff were identified removing money from the till and under ringing. One employee admitted to theft of £20,000 over a two year period, and arrangements are being made for recovery. The other employee admitted to stealing £4,500 over a six month period. The money was repaid within 48 hours.

Shop - £26,000
Acting on the accountant's report that the books were not balancing with cash for goods sold, equipment was installed and the points of sale were watched. The person trusted with balancing cash from the tills and lodging it in the bank admitted to fraudulently cooking the books to a total of £26,000. £11,000 was recovered within days, the rest was recovered over the following weeks.

Newsagent - £53,500
Two employees were seen to be under ringing goods and putting money into open till without registering it. In interviews, one employee admitted to theft of £7,500 over a period of six months. The second, a most trusted and valued member of staff, admitted to £46,000 theft over a number of years. Both cases are now in the hands of the police for prosecution.

Chemist Shop - £12,400
Following monitoring, two employees were interviewed, including one employee who had worked there for over twenty years. There were both underringing purchases into the tills and removing the money from the till later. They admitted theft of £2,400 and £10,000, all of which was paid back within days. Both tendered their resignation and apologised for their actions in writing.

Butchers Shop - £13,000
This shop in a busy town had shown a recent downturn in profit while sales were showing no decline. One butcher was identified as being a major problem and was interviewed. He had been employed for eight months and was an uncle of the owner. He admitted theft of £13,000, which he paid back the following day.

Shop/Filling Station - £17,000
After the owner discovered frequent discrepancies of £50 to £100 from one particular till, an employee in the tyre depot was seen to remove money from the till. He admitted to theft of £17,000, of which £7,000 has since been recovered.

Shop/Filling Station - £10,000
Five members of staff were interviewed, including the trainee manager. Admissions of theft of stock and money were gained from all five, involving sums from £400 to £8,000. Evidence has been handed over to the police pending prosecutions.

Lounge Bar Restaurant - £5,000
The head barman admitted theft of £5,000 over a nine-month period and giving away drinks to friends at the bar on occasions. His resignation was accepted and the money was repaid within two weeks.

Food Store - £8,000
A full time member of staff was found serving her partner and his brother with hot food, cigarettes and newspapers every morning for no payment. She was also monitored taking home groceries without paying. She admitted to theft of goods amounting to £8,000 over a two-year period, and arrangements have been made for the recovery of the money.

Mace Food Store - £10,000
A mother, her daughter and a friend were found serving each other large amounts of groceries and cigarettes every day and not paying. All three admitted to theft of £1,000, £4,000 and £5,000 respectively. Some of this money has been recovered and all three suspects are being prosecuted.

Supermarket - £10,000
A total of 11 staff were interviewed, involving theft ranging from £40 to £5,000. So far, £5,600 has been paid back with more to follow.

Newsagents - £6,500
Three employees were stealing lottery scratch cards and money. They used to sell products, but registered the sale as lottery instants. They took the scratch cards, and claimed the money when they won. One employee admitted to stealing £6,500 over a four month period. All three employees were arrested by the police pending prosecution.

Public House/Off Licence - £15,500
Following the upgrading of an analog system to a digital system, the head barman was discovered not registering sales into the till by entering no sales. He admitted to theft totalling £15,500. Part of this was recovered, and the case is now with the police.
